THE MAKING OF THIS ISLAND
The island outline, lagoon boundaries and beaches come from OpenStreetMap. Ground elevations primarily use the official Santa Catarina bare-earth model, published through the municipal Geoportal. Its survey dates to 2010–2012. Copernicus GLO-30 supplies explicitly recorded gaps and the mainland landing patch.
The terrain follows unsimplified mapped coastlines and lagoon boundaries, with a 125 m interior grid and finer terrain around Mercado Público. Elevations blend toward an illustrative coastal water level. Inland water follows estimated local elevations, so elevated ponds do not pull hills down to sea level. Beach coverage is partial; the turquoise coastal band is decorative. Older survey data, coarse sampling and surface-model fallbacks remain limitations. Streets follow mapped OpenStreetMap centerlines, with illustrative widths.
Buildings use mapped OSM footprints and additional municipal cadastral outlines, with courtyard holes preserved. Geometry loads around the camera. Conflicting and invalid additions are held for review; selected landmark corrections retain both source references. The municipal layer has a 2020 metadata date, which does not establish every building’s survey date. Coverage and current existence are not fully verified. Only 108 records contain tagged heights; 1,608 use floor counts. Selected roofs use individually reviewed historical raster estimates; other unmeasured buildings use a 3.3 m estimate. These estimates use 2010–2012 surface and ground data checked against dated aerial imagery, including 2024 views for the newer Centro and Beira-Mar reviews. Current height remains unverified. Disputed Rendeiras waterfront outlines remain held for review, while two confirmed land-side footprints have been restored. Heights, roofs and windows remain illustrative where unmeasured, and vegetation dimensions remain illustrative where unmeasured. Generic roofs, facade details and colours are illustrative, chosen by deterministic rules from footprint shape, mapped tags and points of interest, commercial-street corridors and neighbourhood palettes, not surveyed. Landmark locations have been reviewed against a limited set of photographs and aerial images; Mercado Público has photo-informed arcades, roof bands, elevated end galleries, towers and a courtyard canopy. Both gates and sampled courtyard bays are walkable. Heights, bay spacing and shallow arcade corridors remain illustrative. Palácio Cruz e Sousa retains its mapped footprint and tagged height, with five upper openings counted in an official photograph; facade spacing and ornament remain simplified. The airport terminal keeps its mapped outline with simple pier and terminal roofs, plus an open entrance canopy, checked against architectural sections and a 2024 aerial image. Metal roof edges and broad glazing bands follow inspected architectural photographs, with illustrative facade dimensions and unchanged collision geometry. Its heights and internal divisions are approximate. Catedral now has photo-based twin towers, a central pediment and pitched nave; tower dimensions remain provisional. Four TICEN platforms retain mapped footprints with open covered aisles, round columns and ground-conforming paving; roof and support dimensions remain estimates. Airport pavement follows mapped runway and civil-apron polygons, with an estimated southern extension of the secondary runway and estimated taxiway D width. Pavement follows the existing coarse terrain; its grades are approximate. Santo Antônio’s church combines its OSM outline and a reviewed municipal rear wing; roof orientation follows photographs, while heights and facade dimensions remain estimates. Its forecourt and stairs are unresolved. Main runway 14/32 has source-informed paint with estimated marking dimensions, fitted to the existing pavement. Selected landmarks use shared procedural plaster, tile, trim and metal detail that fades at distance. Pattern sizes are illustrative; flat roof placeholders, airport walls and uncertain caps stay plain. No reference photographs are used as textures. Forte de Santa Bárbara retains its mapped outline with a photo-informed hip roof, stepped north crown and corrected upper-window arrangement. Heights and facade dimensions remain estimates; the aerial roof displacement does not verify the ground footprint. Its stairs and court are unresolved, and the two doorway marks remain closed, with no interior access. Ressacada retains its mapped stadium rings and separate pitch outline. Canopy coverage follows photos; heights and simplified seating remain estimates. Pitch markings are illustrative regulation-based geometry, and aerial alignment is uncertain by several metres. The exterior has no modeled walkable entrance. The Ribeirão and Lagoa churches retain mapped outlines with photo-informed towers and pediments. Heights are estimates. Their foundations meet the current coarse terrain, but the real terraces and stairs remain unresolved, and neither church has an accessible interior. Other landmark shapes remain simple mapped volumes.
Vegetation uses mapped woodland, scrub and other ground-cover areas, checked against four bounded 2024 aerial views. Nearby trees have clustered crowns and varied forms; distant vegetation uses simpler models. Most individual plants are illustrative samples inside mapped cover. Accepted OSM tree points and seven reviewed Rendeiras canopy centers retain separate provenance; the latter have approximately 5 m positional uncertainty and estimated heights. Open fields, sand and mapped water are kept clear of inferred forest. Ground grain is generated graphic detail, not satellite texture. Praça XV’s Velha Figueira uses its mapped trunk position and a photo-informed broad crown with low winding branches. Its height and crown dimensions are estimated. This tree has a simple bole collider; ordinary vegetation has no trunk collision. Praça XV paths follow 26 mapped footways; seven widths are tagged and nineteen are estimated. Mapped stairs and the memorial remain unresolved. Fifteen illustrative broadleaf trees add canopy within three areas reviewed in a municipal 2016 aerial image. Their individual positions, count, species and dimensions are not surveyed or verified as current. Existing mapped trees remain; new trunks clear paths and modeled foliage leaves walking clearance. Coverage is incomplete.
Hercílio Luz, Colombo Salles and Pedro Ivo follow mapped alignments. Hercílio Luz uses documented main-span, approach-span and tower dimensions. Twenty-four internal bridge ways also have simple connecting decks. A small source-backed mainland patch supports the three main bridges. Deck profiles, some supports and ground transitions are approximations. The coarse terrain can still exaggerate foundations on slopes. The world always uses true scale: one metre per world unit on all axes; it does not mean surveyed accuracy.
Nearby streets have joined carriageways, clear sidewalk edges and markings trimmed around junctions. Widths remain illustrative. Mapped bus shelters and one separately reviewed, approximate traffic-signal support add street detail. Their shapes are simplified; signal phases and object collisions are not simulated. Antonieta de Barros has two traversable tunnels and four approach decks with locally refined entrances. Historical deck elevations and arch dimensions are approximate; approaches connect to surrounding roads, while coarse ground beneath their embankments still needs visual refinement.
